Born into a musically inclined family, Rick was exposed to music early on, as both of his parents were trained opera singers who owned a music store in Rockford. He took advantage of this environment to learn how to play several instruments. After six years of studying the drums, he switched to playing the keyboard and guitar. He formed his own school band called The Phaetons, which subsequently changed its name to The Grim Reapers.

Following a brief period under the name The Grim Reapers, they rebranded themselves as Fuse and released a studio album that didn’t perform well. This led to the disbandment in 1970, after which Rick briefly joined the band Nazz. He also initiated the short-lived Sick Man of Europe before co-founding Cheap Trick in 1973 with Bun E. Carlos, Tom Petersson, and Robin Zander. During the early stages, Nielsen was the primary songwriter for most of their songs, and the band achieved remarkable success, including a No. 1 US single, “The Flame.” He also collaborated with other artists such as John Lennon.

Rick Nielsen and Cheap Trick have made numerous television and radio appearances, including performances on various music shows and late-night programs hosted by David Letterman, Jay Leno, and Conan O’Brien. Nielsen also made appearances in the film “Disorderlies,” and in an episode of “American Pickers.” In 2013, he appeared on “Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me” and featured in Dave Grohl’s documentary “Sound City.” He also collaborated with the Foo Fighters, and one of his recent appearances was on “Live From Daryl’s House,” all of which have contributed to his net worth.

Throughout his career, Nielsen has collaborated with various artists such as Hall & Oates, Alice Cooper, Motley Crue, and House of Lords. He has also penned songs for artists such as The News and Rick Derringer.

Outside of music, Rick owns his own brewery and pizzeria and is involved in local charitable work. His extensive guitar collection has been showcased in various exhibits across the US.

On a personal note, Rick is married to Karen, and they have three sons and a daughter. He has acquired an estimated two thousand guitars over the years, with reports indicating that he currently owns about 250 different instruments. In 2002, he displayed 34 guitars at a free exhibit. He is known for wearing a flipped ball cap during performances, exhibiting similarities to Huntz Hall of The Bowery Boys. He has also undergone several fashion transformations over the years.
