By James Williams

George Reeves was born on January 5, 1914, in Woolstock, Iowa, USA. He became known as George Reeves and was an actor who appeared in major films from the late 1930s to the 1950s. Reeves is best known for his role as Superman in the hit television series “Superman Adventures” that aired in the 1950s, and for speculation regarding the circumstances of his death. He was one of the first important figures of the television industry in the US. Unfortunately, he passed away in 1959.

Reeves’ net worth has been estimated to be around $1 million, converted to the present day. Acting was the main source of his modest fortune.

Growing up in Woolstock, after his parents’ divorce, he and his mother moved to Pasadena, California, where he attended Pasadena High School. An amateur in boxing but more importantly in music, he enrolled at the Pasadena Playhouse to develop his potential as an actor. In 1927, George took the name of his new father-in-law and called himself George Bessolo until 1939. He then changed his name to stabilize his acting career, adopting the stage name George Reeves.

Reeves’ career saw him being part of the prestigious cast of “Gone with the Wind” (1939) with Clark Gable, Vivien Leigh, and Olivia de Havilland, directed by Victor Fleming and subsequently being hired by Warner, Fox, and Paramount. In 1951, he gained widespread acclaim for the series “The Adventures of Superman”, which ran until 1958 totaling 104 episodes. Sadly, the end of the series marked the decline of the actor due to poor investments and unnecessary expenses that led him to debts.

George Reeves passed away on the 16th June 1959 in Benedict Canyon, Los Angeles, California, USA. The official cause of death is reported as suicide. However, there have been theories and speculations concerning murder or an accidental death, due to his history and personal relationships.

Later in his life, Reeves was linked romantically to Leonore Lemmon, and an engagement was reportedly in the works. Reeves was also married to Ellanora Needles from 1940 to 1950. Reeves’ life and death continue to be the subject of interest and speculation to this day.

Reeves’ contribution to entertainment has been recognized, and he was awarded a star on the Walk of Fame for his television work. He’s also been nominated for multiple TV Land Awards for his role in the “Adventures of Superman”.
