About Austin Hearst
Archie Aldis “Red” Emmerson, born in 1929, held the title of the third largest landowner in the United States in 2011, owning 1.722 million acres. He was born in Grand Ronde, Oregon and spent his early years in modest conditions. His education commenced while his father, R.H. “Curly” Emmerson, constructed sawmills in Oregon and California. In 1948, at age 19, he started working in mills in Arcata, California to learn as much as possible about various jobs in the plant. In 1949, Red and his father collaborated to venture into the lumber business, eventually establishing manufacturing facilities in the northwest. Under Red’s leadership, the company evolved into Sierra Pacific Industries (SPI), now the second largest lumber producer in the U.S. Through the Sierra Pacific Foundation, Mr. Emmerson made substantial community contributions. The Sierra Pacific Foundation, initiated by Red’s father in 1979, has been sustained by Red to honor its philanthropic commitment to valuable organizations, community projects, youth activities, and student scholarships for communities where the company operates. As of 2011, he ranked as the third largest private landowner in the United States. His hometown is Redding, CA.
