Winningham was born in Phoenix, Arizona on May 16, 1959 to Marilyn Jean and Sam Neal Winningham. Her mother was an English teacher and college counselor at Monroe High School, while her father was at California State University Northridge (CSUN) as chair of the physical education department.
She is one of five children born to her parents. Mare was raised in Northridge, Calif., and attended Andasol Ave. Primary School, Patrick Henry Secondary School and Chatsworth Secondary School.
Mare Winningham attributes her first interest in acting to an interview with Kym Karath from The Sound of Music she watched on TV when she was six years old. While at Andasol, Winningham’s interest in the arts grew further as she joined the school’s drama group and also played drums and guitar.
During her days at Patrick Henry Junior High School, Mare opted for extended acting and during the summer break she studied at CSUN’s Teen Theater Workshop and it was during this time that she was given the nickname Mare. After high school, her mother enrolled her at Chatsworth High School, where she starred as Maria in the school production The Sound of Music alongside Kevin Spacey, her classmate at the time. , playing the role of Captain Von Trapp.
Before graduating from high school in 1977, Marea began writing her own songs. Between 1966 and 1977, she had a break singing the Beatles song (“Here, There and Everywhere”) at the Gong Show.
