Jami Beth Gertz was born on October 28, 1965, in Chicago, Illinois. She grew up with her parents and two brothers – Scott and Michael – in healthy suburban Glenview. His father, Walter Gertz, was a builder and contractor. His mother was Sharyn Gertz.
Jami is Jewish and was raised in a conservative family of Judaism with her siblings.
The young actress attended Maine East High School in Park Ridge, Illinois. After high school, she studied acting at New York University.
Career
The actress was discovered when Norman Lear, an American television writer and producer, set up a nationwide talent search. She was cast alongside Andrew Dice Clay at a young age in an episode of Different Traits. She then had a recurring role as the friend and classmate of one of the main characters in The Facts of Life. She was later cast in Square Pegs Sarah Jessica Parker and Amy Linker are among the other cast members.
The Chicago native appeared in her first film, Eternal Love, in 1981. Her role was only very brief, but her career began to take an interest in her when she was cast as Less Than Zero. Soon after, she appeared as a “half-vampire” in the hit 1987 film, The Lost Boys opposite Jason Patric and Kiefer Sutherland.
In the early 90s, she took a break from Hollywood and moved to Paris where she worked as a scent designer for Lanvin. Upon her return to Los Angeles, she played an important but secondary role in the hit 1996 Catastrophe film, Tornado, opposite Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton. Other films she has starred in include Je rsey Girl, Crossroads, Solarbabies and Listen to Me, contributing to a successful career.
She also appeared on an episode of Seinfeld one of Jerry’s girlfriends who worked as a telephone operator. In 1997, she was cast as Dr. Nina Pomerantz, a recurring character on the NBC medical show ER who was so popular in its heyday that it turned an unknown actor into the unknown actor George Clooney. Jami Gertz was rumored to have gotten the role of Rachel Green (which later went to Jennifer Aniston) in FRIENDS but she turned down the part.
In 2000, she was chosen to play Kimmy Bishop, a love interest for Johnny Cage in Ally McBeal. Her role earned her an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.
